Rosaline’s Curse: Prologue

When you hear the word “fairy,” you probably think of a cherub-faced woman with sparkly dragonfly wings. This image is the product of a very powerful movie studio that shall remain nameless, lest they send their people to hunt me down.
There is nothing inherently cute about fairies. In fact, some fairies want to kill you, which I don’t think is cute at all. Luckily, fairies can’t kill you. There is a magical rule that prevents it. Any fairy that kills a human explodes into sand. If you read my last novel, Love, Treachery, and Other Terrors, then you already know this. If you haven’t, then put this book down immediately and go get that one.
If you insist on continuing despite my advice, you are a rebel. Being something of a rebel myself, I respect that. So even though I resent recapping information, I will do it just for you.
Here are the rules concerning fairies:
- A fairy can only kill a human if the human attacks the fairy directly.
- A fairy who kills a mortal unprovoked will die instantly.
- A fairy that causes a mortal physical pain will feel that pain in equal measure.
- If a mortal makes a written or verbal contract with a fairy, and the terms of the contract specify it, all the rules above are nullified.
Fairies are very cunning and over the centuries have found and exploited all kinds of loopholes in these magical laws.
Fairies exist to help people learn and practice virtue. Most live out this vocation to the best of their ability, despite all the frustrations that come with it. Some deeply resent this vocation and instead spend their time and talents entertaining themselves however they please. While there is nothing wrong with entertaining yourself, doing so by tormenting other people is unethical and, frankly, very rude.
This story deals with a mortal by the name of Rosaline, who found herself in the unfortunate position of being tormented by a pair of bored and rebellious fairies…
Author’s Notes:
This is the prologue of Rosaline’s Curse! A satirical fantasy book about what happens when Sleeping Beauty wakes up in the twenty-first century and has to integrate into modern society.
